UMWA Protests Peabody and Patriot's Corporate Greed

Patriot Coal’s bankruptcy hearings starts in just an hour. But Peabody Coal is the biggest culprit in the case.

Peabody created Patriot in 2007, shedding the health care benefits it promised thousands of coal miners who gave Peabody a lifetime of hard work.

While Peabody turns its back on its obligations, Patriot is using bankruptcy to wipe out those retirees’ health care benefits completely.  Meaning thousands of current miners and retirees will be left to cope with black lung, cancer and crippling injuries on their own.

"What we have here is a company reneging on its promises," said UMWA President Cecil E. Roberts, referring to Peabody. "We're not going to take it. We will fight for our members and their families in the courts, in the coalfields and in the streets of St. Louis. Patriot and Peabody have a moral obligation to those who mined their coal.”
